Oklahoma Supreme Court Won’t Let Ryan Walters Jesusify Social Studies Class After All

And there won’t be Bibles in every classroom, either.

Former Oklahoma schools chief Ryan Walters pushed last-minute social studies changes promoting Christianity and election denial without proper public notice. Parents and teachers sued, arguing the move violated the state’s Open Meeting Act. This week, the Oklahoma Supreme Court agreed 5–4, striking down the 2025 standards and restoring the 2019 version.

The court found the public was not adequately informed before the vote. The ruling is a setback for Christian nationalist efforts in Oklahoma schools and follows the state’s decision to abandon Walters’ plan to place Bibles in every classroom.
