Why do some Muslim clerics in Iraq benefit from child marriage? Because they have abundant justification for teaching that child marriage is in accord with Muhammad’s example, and those arguments were used to legalize the practice in Iraq. It’s not surprising that they would have some pecuniary interest in the resulting marriages of young girls to much older men.
