The NPR Jan. 6 Archive

As the Trump administration works to rewrite the history of the Jan. 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol, an NPR investigative project aims to preserve evidence of the crimes committed that day. The Trump administration has been engaged in a systematic effort to whitewash and erase the history of Trump’s 1/6 coup attempt since last January. NPR launched it’s archive on Jan. 4, 2026.

While the Chinese Communist Party seeks a whitewash via total erasure of the 1989 Tiananmen Square protests, the Trump administration strategy to deal with inconvenient history is inversion, i.e., generating noise about 1/6. China wants its citizens to completely forget that Tiananmen happened. By contrast, the Trump administration wants citizens to remember January 6 not as a coup attempt, but as a righteous act of patriotism. The administration is destroying the legal evidence such as videos, texts, and criminal charges, that prove otherwise. Both history distortion tactics achieve the same end, namely destruction of inconvenient historical truth to serve authoritarian power.
