DHS: Federal agent shoots person in leg in Minneapolis; agent, person sent to hospital

U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) officials say the shooting happened just before 7 p.m. after federal law enforcement tried to conduct a traffic stop in Minneapolis.

A DHS spokesperson said the subject of the traffic stop tried to run away from law enforcement before agents caught up with them, and a struggle ensued.

During the struggle, two people came out of a nearby apartment and hit the law enforcement agent with a snow shovel and broom handle, according to DHS officials.

The subject of the traffic stop then got away from federal law enforcement and allegedly began hitting the agent, a DHS spokesperson said.

The agent then fired his weapon and hit the initial suspect in the leg. All three people involved ran into a nearby apartment and barricaded themselves inside, DHS officials said.

A photographer at the scene on 6th Street North captured video of federal law enforcement deploying chemical irritants around 8:45 p.m. Demonstrators could be seen firing apparent fireworks at law enforcement.
