“Unhinged” doesn’t quite capture this moment. We are in a full-blown crisis because our president is butt-hurt about losing an award no one was ever going to give him. And now we’re seriously wondering whether military commanders would obey an order to fire on our closest allies.
Asked whether the Naval War College ever taught scenarios like this, former professor Tom Nichols replied: “No. We did not teach cases where the president loses his last grip on reality and wants to start wars against our own allies. Nor did we imagine a POTUS in a de facto alliance with the Kremlin to destroy NATO.”
Yet here we are, trapped in a world fouled by this man’s insecurities, delusions, and recklessness. The letter Trump wrote is real, not parody.
How bad is this? We have to ask—and the answer is not reassuring. Now is a good time to read Robert Kagan’s latest piece: “America vs. the World – The Atlantic” [Gift link]
