ICE Now Demanding Papers From Off-Duty Cops Caught Driving While Brown

Well of course that’s happening.

Donald Trump’s federal occupation of the Twin Cities has dumped roughly 3,000 deportation officers into the area, prompting local police leaders to warn that DHS’s out-of-control actions are shredding public trust. At a Capitol press conference, Brooklyn Park PD Chief Mark Bruley, St. Paul Chief Axel Henry, and Hennepin County Sheriff DaWanna Witt said they’re fielding endless complaints from U.S. citizens harassed by ICE, while DHS refuses to coordinate with local law enforcement.

Bruley described off-duty officers of color—U.S. citizens—being boxed in at gunpoint and asked for “immigration papers,” including one officer who was racially profiled until she identified herself as a cop. If it’s happening to police, Bruley warned, it’s happening to everyone. DHS’s civil rights violations, he said, “have to stop.”
