GOP Unity Slips on ICE

Some congressional Republicans are carefully, cautiously, equivocally mad.

In the Trump era, it’s rare for Republicans to voice moral objections to the administration. Doing so risks political exile. But after the killing of Alex Pretti by Border Patrol agents in Minnesota—and the administration’s false account of the incident—that silence cracked.

Several GOP lawmakers broke party decorum to call for investigations, hearings, and even ICE’s withdrawal from Minnesota. Figures across both chambers described the video evidence as troubling and demanded accountability, emphasizing the need for transparency to maintain public trust.

Notably absent were Republican leaders, who stayed silent while advancing an ICE funding package without reforms. Whether this episode leads to meaningful change now depends on how seriously Republicans pursue oversight—and whether Democrats are willing to risk a government shutdown to force it.
