Y’all know the snow can make people do some crazy, crazy stuff (especially southerners.)
But I thought northerners had a lick more sense than this:
One man attempted to use a torch to melt the ice at his home in Milton, Massachusetts.
Instead, he accidentally started a fire, and in a matter of minutes, the fire swept through the attic of his home.
“[The] homeowner was using a blowtorch to melt the ice,” said Milton Fire Deputy Chief John Earner.
The homeowner was attempting to melt an “ice dam,” a common feature on homes during snowstorms; here, via the National Weather Service, is a diagram:

They “occur when heavy snow buildup melts during the day and then refreezes when temperatures drop overnight,” according to the NWS; during protracted bad weather it’s “common for the melted water and ice to work up under the shingles until water enters the attic and eventually does damage to the ceilings, wall and contents.”
Unfortunately, this guy destroyed his roof to stop the ice…
