Celibacy and Other Sexual Orientations Within the Catholic Church

Celibacy and Other Sexual Orientations Within the Catholic Church

I was recently reading an article about celibacy and how it was forced on unsuspecting clerics some 1,700 years ago with the infamous bigotted antisemitic canons of the Synod of Elvira (Granada, España) c. 306 CE.  With the rule on forced celibacy:

Bishops, presbyters, deacons, and others with a position in the ministry are to abstain completely from sexual intercourse with their wives and from the procreation of children.  If anyone disobeys, he shall be removed from the clerical office.[Englisce translation of canon 33, Synod of Elvira]

Where clergy from bishops down to priest saw their matrimonial bed and their spouses, and families disappear in an instance the edict of the Synod of Elvira’s proclamation.

However, according to Catholic sources on articles 1579/1580 (see below) that Priests are chosen from men of faith, and accepted celibacy with a joyous heart proclaims the Reign of God.

§

And God blessed them. And God said to them,

“Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth and subdue it and have dominion

over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens

and over every living thing that moves on the earth.”

—Genesis 1:28 ESV

Yet, we know that paedophilia is rampant within the church and that homosexuality and even bisexual and heterosexual active priests are also a concern to a church that forced celibacy.  Being celibate is not a gift of human evolution or what the biblical God envisaged for his so-called creation!

Humans are no different from other animals that have to copulate to keep the genus/species evolving or to make the world go round as it were.   It is nature that determines the biology of man and other animal life on earth.  Not a religious sect that saw fit after three centuries following their so-called saviour execution, to deem it necessary to go against the rule of nature and our internal biological clock.  Also, Nuns got chastised by the canons of Elvira for doing what nature intended, and they too have celibacy thrust upon them not because of a god-given law, no, because the ancient Pagan Roman religion stated that the Vestal Virgins were to be chaste!

Canons 13-14 of The Synod of Elvira Concerning Virgins (Nuns)

  1. Virgins who have been consecrated to God shall not receive communion even as death approaches if they have broken the vow of virginity and do not repent.  If, however, they repent and do not engage in intercourse again, they may receive communion when death approaches.

  1. If a virgin does not preserve her virginity but then marries the man, she may receive communion after one year, without doing penance, for she only broke the laws of marriage.  If she has been sexually active with other men, she must complete a penance of five years before being readmitted to communion.

Bisexual/Heterosexual Abuse of Nuns by Priests

19th and 20th-century Canadian clerical history has shown that heterosexual priests have had dominion over Nuns, with many Nuns being forced to have sex with Priests.  Aided and betted by mother-superiors with many Nuns falling pregnancies.  One would have thought that these unplanned babies went to good homes with their parentage kept anonymously.  Well, one would be wrong.  To save the Priest anonymity who fathered the child, the old nuns of the convent disposed of the baby either septic (sewer) cisterns or as in the case of Maria Monk’s experience in a Canadian Nunnery.  The babies were suffocated and taken to the cellar and disposed of in a pit, then covered with lime.[The Awful Disclosure of Maria Monk (1997), pp. 99/100, Senate, London.  ISBN 1 85958 499 3 (copyright Ⓒ Canova Press Ltd/Luxor Press Ltd, 1969, London]

Articles 1579 and 1580 of The Catechism of the Catholic Church

1579 All the ordained ministers of the Latin Church, with the exception of permanent deacons, are normally chosen from among men of faith who live a celibate life and who intend to remain celibate “for the sake of the kingdom of heaven.”  Called to consecrate themselves with undivided heart to the Lord and to “the affairs of the Lord,”  they give themselves entirely to God and to men. Celibacy is a sign of this new life to the service of which the Church’s minister is consecrated; accepted with joyous heart celibacy radiantly proclaims the Reign of God.

1580 In the Eastern Churches a different discipline has been in force for many centuries: while bishops are chosen solely from among celibates, married men can be ordained as deacons and priests. This practice has long been considered legitimate; these priests exercise a fruitful ministry within their communities. Moreover, priestly celibacy is held in great honour in the Eastern Churches and many priests have freely chosen it for the sake of the Kingdom of God. In the East, as in the West, a man who has already received the sacrament of Holy Orders can no longer marry.
