I was in the grocery store the other day and was making my way through the frozen section. My head happened to turn and see some frozen bread. It took me a couple of seconds, but I ended up doing a double take. The brand’s name was Ezekiel 4:9.
In short, here’s the Bible verse their name is based off of from their website: “Take also unto thee wheat, and barley, and beans, and lentils and millet, and spelt and put them in one vessel…”
The reason for my shock and, I’ll admit, a bit of horror was because of what comes after that verse in the Book of Ezekiel, specifically verse 12. From the New Revised Standard Version: “You shall eat it as a barley-cake, baking it in their sight on human dung.“
I ended up finding a Huffington Post article on the story behind the brand, but that still didn’t assuage my feelings. Anywho, it’s question time.
- Do you think this is a good idea or is Ezekiel 4:9 due for an advertising makeover?
- How, in general, do you feel about products that use religious scriptures as part of their branding?
