R&I NV — A tiny chameleon with exceptionally large male genitals may be the world’s smallest reptile.
Two individuals of the species, called Brookesia nana for its nano size, were discovered in a degraded rainforest in Madagascar in 2012.
The male measured 21.6 millimetres from snout to tail (a shade longer than the width of an Australian 5-cent coin) and the female was significantly larger, measuring 28.9mm end to end (closer to the width of a 20-cent coin).
Unveiling their find in Scientific Reports last week, researchers wrote the individuals may belong to “the world’s smallest reptile species”.
