South Africa has one of the highest rates of violent crime in the world, with many forms of violence affecting its people, such as assault, robbery, murder, homicide, rape, vigilantism/mob violence, taxi wars, police brutality, culpable homicide, and kidnappings, among others.
According to the national statistics (South Africa, 2019a) on violent crimes, which include murder, attempted murder, rape, assault with the intent to inflict grievous bodily harm, robbery with aggravating circumstances, robbery at residential premises and motor vehicle hijacking, the daily average of crimes in 2018–2019 was
58 murders;
53 attempted murders;
114 rapes;
468 assaults with the intent to inflict grievous bodily harm;
384 robberies with aggravating circumstances;
61 households robberies; and 44 motor vehicle hijacking.
