‘The runway’s across from Wendy’s and Aldi’: Audio of plane’s emergency landing in Loudoun County

Air traffic control audio captured Friday’s emergency landing of a small airplane in Loudoun County but doesn’t offer any clues as to what went wrong.

The plane, a single-engine Cessna 208 Caravan with five passengers and two crewmembers, departed Dulles International Airport at about 12:45 p.m., when light to moderate snow was falling in the area.

According to the audio from Live ATC, the Cessna took off in a westerly direction from Runway 30, the only east-west runway at Dulles. After it took off, the Dulles controller told the pilot to turn right and contact Potomac Departure, the control center that oversees operations in the Washington area.
