This post isn’t about the deities of ancient Egypt, but it could be. Nor is it about the old Irish legend of Oscar, but it could also be. And this post is definitely not about the Academy Awards that some might argue adopted its iconic statuette from both mythologies (it’s an idea that’s interesting to think about, but that’s about it).
No, this is a free-for-all post for anyone who appreciates a good story–stories that happen to be religious and/or mythological in nature. When I use the word, “myth,” it is not to demean anybody for their beliefs. For me in most contexts, and for this post in particular, I define “myths” as “meaningful stories.” Period.
If we had an awards ceremony for all the stories throughout history about deities, demigods, heroes and legends, angels and demons, etc, what/who would you nominate for each category and why?
For example, who would you nominate (or which story would you nominate to represent the figure) for
- best creator deity
- best destroyer
- best trickster
- best deity of love
- best deity of places such as the underworld, oceans, earth, etc
- best deity of activities such as hunting, dreaming, dancing, etc
- best hero or best legend
- best story or stories
- best comedy (I’d like to see if there is any comedy in religion. So far, not much to write home about)
- best mythological creature
- etc (make your own category)
And it would be cool if you made an attempt to get out of your comfort zones and nominated figures from religions other than the familiar, but there are no requirements for this. It’s a free-for-all. I just appreciate a good smorgasbord.
