Indiana Jones wasn’t LDS. Here’s Why.

Today, I saw a dumpster fire of a take from a certain Mormon website that serves as the title of this OP that I re-mixed. According to the article, Indiana Jones was part of their faith. Since the article is so short, I’ll re-post it here:

The case for Indiana Jones being a Latter Day Saint, albeit a lapsed one, is intriguing. His early scouting days in Utah align with the Church’s embrace of the scouting program in 1912. Living in Utah during that time also increases the likelihood of being a Latter-day Saint.

Moreover, Indiana’s father, a European immigrant, likely from the British Isles, adds another layer. Considering Indiana’s birth in the 1890s, his father’s immigration around the 1880s or 1870s aligns with a significant wave of British converts who settled in Utah.

The shared passion for ancient languages, records, and religious artifacts between Indiana and his father raises eyebrows. Could this fascination be influenced by the teachings of a certain founding prophet with similar interests? The opening scenes of “Raiders,” set in Central America during an archaeological expedition, hint at a potential connection to Book of Mormon interests.

Notably, Indiana Jones attended Sunday School, offering another piece of the puzzle. Despite potentially losing some faith during graduate school, his lingering affection for his LDS roots suggests a lasting impact. The question remains: is this canon until proven otherwise?

Everything about this take is hilariously wrong. For starters, Indiana Jones isn’t from Utah, he’s from New Jersey. In the first episode of The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles, he explicitly states that he was born and grew up in Princeton and that his father was a professor of Medieval Studies at the university. Henry Jones, Senior, was from Scotland and attended Oxford University. In 1898, he beheld a vision of the Holy Grail which set him on the path to finding it.

That takes care of a good portion of the article. Let’s move on to Utah. After the death of Anna Jones, father and son moved there, during which the prologue of The Last Crusade takes place. This was about two years after they had returned from a lecture tour that began in 1908.

All that’s left is the beginning of Raiders of the Lost Ark. Literally, in the first five minutes, the text on screen clearly states that Indy is in South America, not Central America.

Now that my rant is over, it’s question time. Have you seen other takes that claim a fictional character is a member of certain religious faith?
