Donald Trump may be having second thoughts about next month’s debate against Vice President Kamala Harris.
The former president on Sunday night slammed debate host ABC as “fake news,” claimed its shows featured a “Panel of Trump Haters,” and attacked several of the network’s personalities by name. . . .
Trump’s latest message suggests that date could now be in doubt.
But this time, it’s after the convention, including Harris’s out-of-the-park grand-slam acceptance speech — which we all know he watched, because he was sending out spitting mad messages about it on his social media feed while it was going on.
(I’m getting dizzy from all this zigging and zagging, so I’m wondering how nauseating it must be these days for those CEOs who depend on stability and predictability when making business decisions.)It may be finally penetrating his demented brain that he is not, no he is not, going to get another debate with Joe Biden. Instead, he is going to have to face off against a younger, snappier, much more confident nominee who has the number and knows exactly how to counter what he did in the last debate and anything new he might try. A nominee who is also three of the things he fears and hates most: Woman, Black, Prosecutor.
Now he’s scared for real.
Bullying and blustering and schoolyard taunts are all Trump knows. He certainly doesn’t know policy (other than Project 2025, which is trying to run away from). He got away with it in the debate with Biden, but he’s been watching Harris and he knows his shtick won’t work on her.
It is barely possible that he has figured out a way to fight Harris on the debate stage, but given that his debate prep, such as it is, is using Tulsi Gabbard as the Harris standin, I rather doubt it. And yes, he has played this game of “Will I? Won’t I?” before, only to show up at the last minute. But this time I really do believe he is terrified to get out on that stage with Kamala Harris and will do anything to weasel out of it.
If he does show up, look for him to be a wreck.
