Christians Freed the Slaves?

Today, I’d like to draw your attention to two quotes by the user who inspired my “Magical Biology” OP. They are:

Yet it was Christians in England and the US that ended slavery.

and:

There were Southern Democrats who call themselves Christians who tried to justify slavery because of their self-interest.

According to this user, the citizens of the Confederacy were merely masquerading as Christians while they fought to defend slavery. With that out of the way, I’d like to draw your attention to a quote from Bloody Crimes by James L. Swanson:

On the morning of Sunday, April 2, 1865, President Jefferson Davis walked, as was his custom, from the White House of the Confederacy to St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, where Robert E. Lee and his wife worshipped and where Davis was confirmed as a member of the parish in 1861.

The source I’m using for my OP also goes into detail on how Christianity was interwoven with the Confederacy’s identity.

What do you think? Were the Confederates pretending to be Christian or were they Christians in full during the Civil War?
