Jesus, was king of the Jews… really?
The myth that Jesus was crucified on a (Christian) cross with a titulus/plaque with three inscriptions in Greek, Latin, and Hebrew, proclaiming him king of the Jews. In the west we are more familiar with the Latin: IESUS NAZARENVS REX IVDAEORVM or abbreviated (INRI), however, having three inscriptions did not leave much room for the condemned, in the case of Jesus, whose language was Aramaic (a Northwest Semitic language that originated in the ancient region of Syria) was not even inscribed on the titulus. Not only do we have three different languages, the Bible gives us three different versions of the inscription on the Titulus Crucis. The three are “This is Jesus, the king of the Jews” according to Matthew 27:37, and Luke 23:38; “The King of the Jews” according to Mark 15:26; “Jesus the Nazarene, king of the Jews” according to John 19:19. So which one is it?
New Testament religionist translators through the centuries have made-out that Jesus and his disciples were literate, yet, Acts 4:13 in the Greek NT have Peter, and John as illiterate idiots, and Jesus does not fare well either. As we read in John Chapter 7:
15 The Jews there were amazed and asked, “How did this man get such learning without having been taught?”
16 Jesus answered, “My teaching is not my own. It comes from the one who sent me.” John 7:15-16.
You don’t need to be a rocket scientist to come up with the Titulus being a fake, on the grounds of the languages being inscribed, the Jews or Judaeans would have spoken Aramaic at the time. The Jews coming back from the Babylonian exile would have spoken Aramaic! As the language of Hebrew died out in the 1st-century, and was not revived, or reinvented untill the 1880s. On religious relics, in the absence of radiocarbon dating, their authenticity cannot be established, that is a fact!
Historical records testify to the existence of Hebrew from the 10th century BCE to the late Second Temple period (lasting to 70 CE), after which the language developed into Mishnaic Hebrew. From about the Babylonian Captivity in the 6th century BCE until the Middle Ages, many Jews spoke Aramaic, a related Semitic language. From the 2nd century CE until the revival of Hebrew as a spoken language circa 1880, Hebrew served as a literary and official language, and as the Judaic language of prayer. After the spoken usage of Mishnaic Hebrew ended in the 2nd century CE, Hebrew had not been spoken as a mother tongue. However, the titulus crucis was radiocarbon dated in 1978 by the University of Rome. The dating showed that the artifact was made between 980 and 1146 AD. This contradicts the earlier claims of dating it between the 1st and 4th centuries AD by some experts. Additionally, in 2002, the Roma Tre University conducted another radiocarbon dated test, which also yielded a date range of 980-1146 AD.
These radiocarbon dating results suggest that the Titulus Crucis is not as ancient as previously believed, and its authenticity as a relic from the 1st century AD, has no credence. Yet, the powers that be still allow it to be shown and venerated as a religious object and not as a fake, stating that tradition has the Titulus as a religious relic from the time of Christ! What lies they tell!
