Yesterday, John Keefe posted an OP entitled “Debate atheism versus theism” in which he posted five arguments that favored the latter over the former. He ended the OP with this statement: “Atheism has no proof of its own position so is it stubbornness that keeps you in that camp?”
However, this is problematic due to the fact that none of his arguments used any sources as proof in favor of them. Let’s go with the fifth point to start:
- “The Existence of Jesus and the Resurrection
Theism’s Strongest Argument: Historical Evidence for Christianity
- Jesus of Nazareth is one of the most well-documented figures of ancient history.
- The resurrection is supported by:
- Empty tomb (never disproven).
- Eyewitness testimony (500+ witnesses, 1 Corinthians 15:3-8).
- Transformation of the disciples (who went from cowards to martyrs).
- Atheism must assume all these accounts are fabrications with no clear motive.
Advantage: Theism—The historical case for Christianity is strong.”
Do you notice something there? All but one of John’s claims are missing sources.
Now, I’m going to make a statement. Try to figure out what’s different:
“On April 14th, 1865, Abraham Lincoln was shot by John Wilkes Booth and died the next day.”

- https://www.loc.gov/collections/abraham-lincoln-papers/articles-and-essays/assassination-of-president-abraham-lincoln/
I made a claim that President Lincoln died on April 15th, 1865. In order to prove it, I provided three different sources that examine his assassination from the United States Senate, Ford’s Theater, and the Library of Congress.
If John Keefe’s “theism” has the advantage, where’s the evidence for it?
