Social Customs Linked To Religion

In Japan, newly arrived foreigners may sometimes pass food to one another using chopsticks, or stick them upright in the bowl of rice.  People will gasp in horror and tell you it is a terrible no-no, but never explain why.

As in the image, after the cremation, the family passes the bones to the urn via chopsticks.

Sticking them upright in the rice, is the offering to the deceased.

What social customs do you know of or practice, that are linked to some religion, even if you are not religious?
