Kaylee Gain, the Missouri teen who suffered traumatic brain injuries following a fight outside her high school, is still displaying “significant cognitive impairment” while in the hospital, her family says in a statement.
Gain, who has recently started talking again, has been in the hospital since March 8. According to an April 1 statement shared with PEOPLE by the family’s attorney, Bryan Kaemmerer, Gain seems to know that she is in the hospital but she does not understand why.
In “limited conversations,” Gain “tends to reiterate the same short sentences over and over,” Kaemmerer says in the statement.
The statement also notes that Gain is still unable to walk without the assistance of hospital staff.
